Fifth Day of Novena to Saint Joseph- Third Sunday After Easter

Saint Joseph, as Head of the Holy Family, had all the pressure of their protection and well being on his shoulders.  Fleeing from Israel and into the land of the pharaohs, he had to chose where they would live.  I always found this to be extremely interesting.  In salvation history, God has often used Egypt in many ways to fulfill His plans.  As a rod of discipline for His children,  as a place of refuge and learning for Moses and Joseph and as a precious depository for the Holy Family.  Also, the mystical aspect of the Egyptians is important, as long as it is seen through the eyes of the Word of God.

Many do not know that there is one structure in architecture that has an actual, chief cornerstone; that phrase is not just metaphorical, but a real allusion to the place of Egypt in God’s plan for His world; for it is a pyramid that has a chief cornerstone!  It is the only cornerstone that touches all sides of the structure.  Our Lord is called the Chief Cornerstone.  Many Church Fathers teach us that “the just aspirations of the honorable pagans, (those that never heard the Word of God, but followed God to the best of their abilities) are fulfilled in Christ, Who is the Light of the World and the fulfillment of all true prophesy; for the Spirit blows where It will, and no man can tame It.”

In this Eastertide we are grateful for the resurrection power of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Who promises heaven to those Who love Him.th

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

Fourth Day of Novena to Saint Joseph- Feast of Saint Antoninus

Great Saint Joseph was the Illustrious Son of David, Light of the Patriarchs, Spouse of the Mother of God, Chaste Guardian of the Virgin Mary and the Foster-father of the Son of God.  He listened to the voice of God in his dreams.  So close was he to God that he knew that it was the Lord talking him in his dreams.  One has to have a relationship to the Divine to know when to act on a dream.

Saint Joseph, pray for us.

Saint Antoninus was a public executioner before he was converted.  He came to faith in Jesus Christ because of a vision he had while he was attending the martyrdom of Saint Eusebius.  He immediately proclaimed his faith in Jesus Christ and was himself martyred!  In this way, he was similar to Saint Genesius, patron of actors, who was converted on stage while mocking the Catholic sacraments.  He, too was martyred immediately.

Saint Antoninus, pray for us!1476

Third Day of Novena to Saint Joseph- Feast of St. Gregory Nazianzen

It is appropriate, in the Month of Our Lady, that we should honor her dear spouse, Great Saint Joseph, Foster Father of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  For he was chosen, like her, above all others to protect the Virgin Mother of God and the Son of God.  Holy Writ calls him JUST; what a simple and profound statement.  Nothing more need be said, for from this one verse all the virtues of Saint Joseph may be extrapolated and have been done so in the millennia of church history.

If you have a problem with your earthly father, go to Saint Joseph and he will teach you what a true father is and he will lead you, as is the role of the Communion of Saints, to Our Blessed Lord, Who Himself shows us the Eternal Father; “Do you not know that he who sees Me, sees the Father?”

O BLESSED SAINT JOSEPH, pray for us as we turn to thee in our necessities.

Saint Gregory Nazianzen was a great teacher in the early church.  A man that was often thrust into positions of power that he did not ascribe to, but took our of obedience.  A great poet, (true poetry and the arts are a sign of the Presence of God,) he had holy friendships with St. Basil and many others, which led to many souls being saved.  He is the only teacher in Holy Mother Church to be holder of the term DIVINE, along with Saint John, the best friend of Our Blessed Lord and author of the sublime, fourthth 1000 gospel and epistles.

St. Gregory Nazianzen, pray for us.

The Feast of the Apparition of Saint Michael the Archangel- Day Two of the Novena to Saint Joseph

The history of the feast of the Apparition of Saint Michael the Archangel is quite remarkable.  In the year 495, a wealthy man had a large herd of cattle grazing on Monte Gargano in Italy, not far from the city of Siponto.

One day a steer went astray from the herd and did not return with the rest of the cattle.  The owner and his men went in search of the steer and finally found him on the summit of the mountain, lying at the entrance of a cave.  The animal refused to leave the spot.  Exasperated by its stubbornness, the owner took up his bow and sent an arrow towards the poor animal.  However, the arrow whirled about in the air, returning to the archer and wounded him.

All were frightened at the strange incident and no one ventured to approach the place.  They went to the bishop of Siponto and told him what had happened.  The holy prelate, after serious reflection, concluded there must be some mystery involved.  He then prayed fervently that the Will of God would be revealed.  Thereupon, Saint Michael appeared to him in great splendor and said: “I am Michael the Archangel, and I stand always before the Lord.  I am keeping this place under my special protection.  By this strange event, I wish to remind men to celebrate the divine service in my honor and that of all the Angels.

After this revelation, the bishop and all the inhabitants of the place went up the mountain in solemn procession and worshiped the Lord and prayed to Him through the intercession of Saint Michael.  When they arrived at the cave they found an entrance which led down a stairway.  No one, however, ventured to enter.  They performed their devotions at the opening.  After that, many pilgrims came to the mountain.

Much later, around the year 663, the Neapolitans decided to make war with Siponto and Benevento.  The latter, at the advice of their bishop, kept a three day fast and called upon the assistance of the holy Archangel.  During the night preceding the proposed attack, the Archangel again appeared to the bishop and told him that God had heard their petitions and that in the fourth hour of the day they should courageously meet their enemy and they would be granted victory.

As soon as the attack began, all of Mount Gargano was shaken with an earthquake.  The entire summit was enveloped in dark clouds, from which came flashes of lightening, like fiery arrows that were directed at the enemy, who promptly retreated.  In joy and gratitude and with fervent prayer, the conquerors finally entered the sacred spot.  They found the cavern to be the perfect size for a church would could hold about five hundred souls.

The cave had evidently been a place of refuge in which the early Catholics had secretly had Mass and devotions during times of persecution.  From a crevice in the rock, which formed the ceiling of the sanctuary, water dripped down from the rock face.

This water was refreshing and most pleasant to taste and it possessed healing properties.  Many sick persons were instantly cured after drinking this water; others found health through the intercession of Saint Michael.  Many other miracles proved this place as special and under the protection of heaven.  Alongside of this subterranean church the bishop erected another, in which services were conducted by canons regular, (priests of a religious order.)  This church still exists.

SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL, defend us in battle.  Be our protection against the malice and snares of the devil.  May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Power of God, cast into hell Satan, and all the other evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.  Amen.

Mary, Most Holy, pray for us.

Saint Joseph, pray for us.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy up on us.

Vidi Aquam

I saw water gushing from the temple, from the right side- Alleluia:

And all to whom this water comes are made saved and they will say- Alleluia!

Praise the Lord for He is good; for His mercy is forever…

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be.  World without end.  Amen.

Christ is the Living Water that gives us life and renews us and gives us life again when we have fallen and are in need of restoration.  Pray in thanksgiving this day for all the wonderful graces the Risen Christ freely gives us.  Also, keep in mind all those in our human family that lack not only the grace of faith in Christ but who are denied even the simple necessity of actual drinking water.  All over the world water is rationed and the poor are gouged and can not afford to even drink their fill.  In Africa, water in villages is often locked by mechanisms that can only be activated by money.  This is a terrible thing and shameful for those of us in the industrial nations who allow this crime to continue.  “Behold, when you did it to the least of my brothers, you did it to Me.”

O God, take away our complacency in living our privileged lives.  Keep us in continual remembrance of our brothers and sisters who suffer and compel us, for love of You, to right action and humble prayer.  In the Name of Jesus, He Who is the Living Water come down from heaven.  Amen.

Holy Saturday

The beautiful, ancient observances of Holy Saturday are the oldest in the Church.  This is the day that we enter into the great mystery of the Resurrection from the dead of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  It is the last day of Lent, but it is the day on which the fasting of Lent is over.  Since Our Blessed Lord died for us on Good Friday, Holy Mother Church stopped fasting on Holy Saturday in anticipation of Easter Sunday.  Also, throughout the centuries, Saturday and Sunday never became known for penance, though some would observe a light fast.  Saturday was given to Our Blessed Lady Mary, Our Dear Blessed Mother and Mother of the Church, and Sunday was, of course given to the celebration of the defeat of death by Jesus, Our Saviour.  Every Sunday is a celebration of the Resurrection and every Saturday is a celebration of His Holy Mother; thus, weddings are traditionally held on Saturday.

There is no celebration of the Mass on Holy Saturday, just like Good Friday, since the Mass of the Easter Vigil is properly belonging to Easter Sunday; sundown being ritualistically part of the next day.  The only time the Blessed Eucharist is given on Holy Saturday is when someone is in danger of death; thus Viaticum, (the final Holy Communion) is the only time a Catholic may communicate on this day.

There are so many wonderful reasons for the practices of Holy Mother Church and they are all waiting to be discovered!  Simply read and pray and God will lead you to what you need to know.

On this day let us remember those who are suffering in this world and those Catholics and all Christians that are being persecuted for love of Christ.  Pray for your family and for your own soul.  Be grateful that you can worship God without persecution.  Pray for the Ukraine, pray for prisoners, pray for the homeless and pray for the tortured.

Christ is the Light of the World, blessed be His Holy Name.  Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary!, AlleExtreme_Humilityluia!  For He that was dead is risen, Alleluia!

Good Friday

Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus,                                                                                                                                               while before Thy face I humbly kneel and with burning soul pray and beseech Thee                                                                      to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity, true contrition for my sins                                                 and a firm purpose of amendment.

While I contemplate, with great love and tender pity, Thy five most precious wounds,                                                           pondering over them within me and calling to mind the words which David, Thy prophet said of Thee, my Jesus:     “They have pierced My hands and My feet; they have numbered all My bones.”
