The Meaning Of Life

The meaning of life is this: to know, love and serve God in this life, so that we may be forever happy with Him in the next, which is eternal. To love God is the greatest of virtues; to be loved by God is the greatest of blessings. God gives this greatest of His blessings to all of His children. We have but to accept it. Once we accept it we are compelled by gratitude to love our neighbor, thereby becoming part of the great cycle of blessing that is God’s will for His creation, instead of the spiral of negativity that is its lack. It is very simple. Accept Love and love in return. “All things work together for good to them that love the Lord…”

O God, thank you for loving me. Help me to love you in return. Amen.

God Is Great

I have often marveled at the way the good Lord works in our lives. When we are in the state of grace and are open to His will and ways He works all things for our good. He puts people in our lives as a gift and then removes them for protection, either for them or for us. We are often like ships that pass in the night, or to use another metaphor like pilgrims on the way of life. We meet up for a while and then part ways. Sometimes He gives us wonderful friends that stay with us for life. This is a great and beautiful gift and one for which we should always be grateful.

However it is in your life, remember that all folks have their own path, their own walk with the Lord. Be kind to all and open to learn from everyone, especially those who persecute us. This is part of the mystery of salvation and an important part of being Catholic. Love. Pray. Forgive. Do the best you can and you will have peace. Always pray for others and never go to sleep without a prayer of gratitude to the Blessed Mother. If you love the Mother, the Son will love you!

Ubi Caritas

Where charity and love prevail
there God is ever found.
Brought here together by Christ’s love,
by love are we thus bound.

In grateful love and holy fear
His charity we learn;
Let us with heart and mind and soul
now love Him in return.

Forgive we now each other’s faults,
as we our faults confess;
And let us love each other well,
in Christian holiness.

Let us recall that in our midst
dwells God’s beloved Son;
by members of His Body joined,
we are in Him made one.

Let strife among us be unknown;
May all contention cease.
Be His the glory that we seek;
Be ours His holy peace.

Keep Your Mouth Shut, (or What I Miss The Most)

I am old enough to remember Holy Mother Church before the false council. I was in seventh grade when the Novus Ordo, or the NO, as I like to call it, otherwise known as the Novus Disorder took hold. We were ushered into it’s vortex of progressive spiritual entropy by the good nuns of the saintly Elizabeth Bailey Seaton. These sisters, within five years, were completely gone from our parish and now, along with many, many orders are dead or clinging to existence by a few elderly members, shunted away into secular nursing homes, the religious homes being closed, as well. The writing was on the wall but few could read the language.

What I miss the most about the old Sacrifice, and something that I have never seen mentioned in even traditionalist tomes is the SILENCE. Silence! The old Catholic churches were known among all, especially non Catholics, for their pervasive silence. One never said a word out loud in the Church. The only sounds were made by the priest, the altar boys and the choir. When someone had to speak they did so in very low tones and no conversations were held. People kept their mouths shut. This was because SOMEONE WAS PRESENT- Someone very special. The architecture of the church was centered on the tabernacle, which was attached permanently to the altar of sacrifice in the center of the church. It was veiled. It was so special that, even when the priest was offering Holy Mass he would never turn his back to the tabernacle- He even stepped aside to say the Dominus Vobiscums! When he opened the tabernacle to give Holy Communion He again stepped aside to give the “Indulgentiam,absolutionem, et remissionem” prayer… Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament was accorded all the rights of the King of the Universe.

When in the presence of the King of Kings, our mouths were shut. Only the voice of the heart was heard by the Lord. The silence was pervasive and intrinsically beautiful. It was a proclamation to the world, to anyone who visited the local Catholic parish, believer of not- SOMEONE IS PRESENT HERE. Something special goes on here. Be quiet. Listen. Behave.

The Catholic people knew, deep in their hearts that something radical had changed after the false council. They voted with their feet and their clothes. No longer is nice clothing worn in “Catholic” churches, people come in shorts, flip flops, t-shirts, no veils, no suits. They know that HE is no longer present. The “priest” wears a bed sheet and preaches a feel good gospel. Hell is never mentioned, his back is always to the tabernacle, (if it is even present at the center of the church, which it probably is not.) Indeed, the “presider” is the center of the proceedings. In the old Sacrifice, it could be any priest- his personality was subsumed in the eternal Sacrifice of the Mass- The Divine Right of every true priest and Catholic.

I could go on and on, of course, but I did want to mention the silence. How I miss it!

The Importance of The WORD

In the beginning was the Word… This great mystery, that of Christ, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity as LOGOS- the WORD, is worthy of daily contemplation. The power of the Word, the transformative, creative energy that occurs when God, as the Word, Jesus, speaks all into existence, including us, His children. This is why everyday words are so important.

We are blessed or condemned by our use of words, which shows the reality of the heart. We bless or curse everyone in our lives, including ourselves and the world by the inexhaustible use of the power of words.

Before anything came the word, and words are the roots of everything that our senses perceive. Nothing can we visualized, indeed, nothing can be imagined in our minds until we have a word for it. We are formed by the Word for the use of words. Therefore, we need to give our hearts to Christ, who gives back to us a new heart. Out of this new heart, which is, when we are in the state of grace, united to the Heart of The Word Made Flesh, Jesus, Our Lord, we are tapped into His consciousness- the Christ consciousness, and what flows from the heart of love to the Heart of Love, without predetermination, is a communion of spirit with Spirit. Words are very important. Think on these things.

An Old English Hymn

My God, my portion and my all,
my everlasting all!
I’ve none but Thee in heaven above
or on this earthly ball.

What empty things are all the skies
and this inferior clod!
There’s nothing here deserves my joys,
there’s nothing like my God.

In vain the bright, the burning sun
scatters his feeble light-
’tis Thy sweet beams create my noon,
if Thou withdraw, ’tis night.

My God, my portion and my love,
my everlasting all-
I’ve none but Thee in heaven above,
there’s nothing like my God…

God Bless America

One of the highlights of my life was my association, when I was young with the wonderful performing group The Young Americans. We sang and danced all over the world and on The Julie Andrews Show, among other great gigs. I met my best friend in the group and was so proud to represent this magnificent nation with my compatriots, all talented and sweet kids. Were we really that young? The world was at our feet and only God knew what lay ahead.

One of the most emotional experiences I had in the last few years was the fiftieth anniversary reunion of the YA’s. I was overwhelmed with pride and gratitude for the great years I had with the group. The founder, Mr. Milton Anderson, showed what one can give back to the world with his formation of the YA’s and the ripples of blessing that he started are still radiating in the lives of all who are touched by The Young Americans. Let us pray for America today and every day, especially in gratitude for the sublime opportunity to be called American.

Remember that the USA is the only nation in the history of the world to be consecrated to the Immaculate Conception, Mary Most Holy. This, I believe has saved us from many dangers. How sad it is to see my homeland descend on the road to perdition. This reminds us all that no matter how much we love America, all nations rise and fall- only God remains forever. I am Catholic first, all else comes after. May it be the same for you.

The Road To Hell

“Some people misunderstand evil and think it will relent, and because their misplaced hope inspires dark hearts to dream darker dreams, they are the fathers and mothers of all wars. Evil does not relent; it must be defeated- and even when defeated, uprooted, and purified by fire, evil leaves behind seed that will one day germinate and, in blooming, again be misunderstood.”

-Dean Koontz

The greatest weapon we have against evil is The Holy Rosary. It is the rosary that the Blessed Mother begs mankind to pray in all of her apparitions. The Holy Rosary leads us to the Holy Mass, the summit and source of all power in good. While we yet can we fight evil, within and without, for the day is coming when we will be beyond the opportunity for merit and fight. Work for the night is coming! Pray while you are able! Pray, pray, pray and then pray some more, for prayer leads to right thinking and right thinking leads to right choices.

Friends Are Family

For those who, like me come from a dysfunctional family, (we put the fun in dysfunctional. Our sense of humor, which is genetic if it is anything, was our saving grace; that and grace itself!)- friends are all the more important. In fact, they become our family of choice. They become the manifestation of the consolation of God. The best of friends are those with whom one can be silent. This takes years of friendship to get to but is a wonderful experience and a cherished development.

The great, forgotten title of Our Blessed Lord is that of Friend. He is God, surely. He is Brother, Lord, King and Saviour- of course, but He is also FRIEND. The kind of Friend one can pour out our joys, wishes, disappointments and failures to. That special Friend that will always accept us as we are, not what we feel we are supposed to be. The Cure of Ars, (St. John Vianney,) had a parishioner who would spend hours in front of the Blessed Sacrament. One day he asked him what he prayed about to the Lord. The man said, “Oh, I don’t pray, Father; I look at Him and He looks at me.” That is the familiarity to which Christ calls us. That is a beautiful place to be. May God manifest Himself to you as Friend.

“Lord, thank you for all the wonderful friends you give me. May I always be a true friend to them. May I be willing to listen, to love, to speak gently the words of peace, but most importantly, may I have the grace to keep my mouth shut when all that is needed is my presence. Thank You, Lord, for being my Friend. Amen.”

Our Lady of Victory, we have unshaken confidence in your intercession before your Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Humbly we ask your prayers for all Christians in help or need. We implore you to obtain for us grace needed in our lives to make us worthy of sharing Christ’s victory. May we join with you in praise of the Father, His Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
